Grand Ledge got its name from the sandstone ledges that tower like
sentinels along the banks of the Grand River as it winds along
through the city. The ledges are composed of Eaton Sandstone
deposited 250 million years ago. Mostly of quartz grains cemented to
iron oxide, they are one of the most geologically significant areas
in lower Michigan. The "Ledges" is a favorite with climbers who can
be seen scaling the vertical walls throughout the summer.
Grand
Ledge is host to six wonderful festivals every year, including
Yankee Doodle Days, The Island Art Fair, Victorian Days, St
Patrick's Day, Memorial Day, and every autumn The Color Cruise &
Island Festival.
The
Grand Ledge Public School District, composed of six
elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school,
and an alternative education high school, educates over
5,000 of the community's children and excels in both
academic and athletic pursuits. The school district is
the second largest in the Greater Lansing area.
